President's Visit To Achalpur

AMRAVATI:
President Pratibha Patil on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the Finlay textile mill at Achalpur in Amravati district of Maharashtra.
The textile mill, which was initiated as a private enterprise in 1903, was closed down in 1959. Then, it was taken over by the Government of Maharashtra and brought under state textile corporation in 1972 and subsequently nationalised on April 1, 1974.
The unit was closed down once again in 2003. The new Finlay mill is now being relocated on this spot with the sophisticated machinery through the investment of Rs 326 crores.
The plant, which has a potential of around 1250 employees, is expected to start production from March 2009.

During her visit, the President will flag off a twice-a-week Amravati-Mumbai train on Sunday afternoon and lay the foundation stone for modernization of Amravati Railway Station. Patil will fly back to New Delhi the same evening via Nagpur.

With a slew of VVIPs coming to Amravati for the two-day presidential visit on September 6 and 7, the district administration has fallen short of accommodation and will be sprucing up four more suites for President Pratibha Patil and central ministers. The sleepy town in Vidarbha is the President's hometown.
Amravati District collector Dr Purshottam Bhapkar said, "The main circuit house will be reserved for the President and her family. CM Vilasrao Deshmukh will be staying in another guesthouse.'' Other guesthouses are being repainted and repaired.
The president will flag off the restarting of a mill in Achalpur and lay the foundation stone for the remodelling of Amravati railway station. She will also flag off the Amravati-Mumbai Superfast Express on September 7.
District officials said railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, union textile minister Shankarsinh Vaghela, Governor S C Jamir, Governor of Kerala R S Gavai, CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, deputy CM R R Patil and a slew of VVIPs will be in the town for two days.
